Dr. Sly is a tenured Professor at the Department of Pediatrics, Faculty of Medicine. Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba where she did her undergraduate degree, she completed her PhD training in Medical Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Alberta and did post-doctoral training at UBC in Infectious Diseases and at the Terry Fox Laboratory, BC Cancer Research Centre. Dr. Sly’s research focusses on the contribution of macrophages to inflammation with a special interest in reducing inflammation in immune-mediated diseases, like inflammatory bowel disease, specifically Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Despite the complexity and diversity of inflammatory bowel diseases in patients, Dr. Sly is optimistic that inroads can be made to improve disease treatment and reduce suffering for patients living with these diseases.
