Social Sciences in Precision Medicine

Please join us for a half a day workshop on Thursday, May 18th to learn and discuss social issues in the transplantation sector.
Our agenda starts at 9.00 am with opening words from Paul Keown (UBC). Franz Fenninger (UBC) will moderate the day.
- 9.15 am Arefeh Rouhi from the Terry Fox Laboratory at the BC Cancer Research Centre BCCRC will present on “Transgender/gender diversity and hematological malignancies”
- 9.45 am Tania Bubela from the Faculty of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University will talk about “Social sciences convergence with translational precision medicine for transplantation”
- 10.15 am Jagbir Gill Medical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at St. Paul’s Hospital, Division of Nephrology, UBC will present their work on the "Bridge to Transplant Initiative – ensuring equitable access to organ transplantation for BC Indigenous populations"
Refreshment break
- 11.15 am Neila Miled from REDI, UBC Faculty of Medicine Office of Respectful Environments, Equity, Diversity & Inclusion, who will talk to us about “EDI in medical research - Integrating social issues into grant applications”
- 12.00 pm Sahil Kanani from UBC Department of Psychiatry, CRESTBD will talk about on “Fostering Diversity and Inclusion in Health Research"
- 12.30 pm Chris Blosser, Clinical Professor from Nephrology at the University of Washington, USA will share his experiences with "Patient engagement in kidney disease and transplant"
Wrap up discussion lead by Dr. Karen Sherwood (VCH) will start at 1 pm, followed by lunch at Regal Mansion Cuisine.
